Pastoral Care
High quality pastoral care at The Fernwood School is central to our ethos and underpins all that we do.
As a team, we want to ensure that all pupils at Fernwood enjoy school, feel safe and make lasting friendships; only then can they focus and engage in learning in the classroom.
Each pupil has a Tutor and meets as a Tutor Group each morning, following a programme of activities from literacy to circle time discussion activities, in addition to a weekly assembly as a year group. Each year group is overseen by a Head of Year who rigorously monitors pastoral care and academic progress. Working closely alongside the Head of Year are the Assistant Head of Year, who are secondary points of contact for all pupils. We also have a member of the senior team linked to each group as well as two Assistant Headteachers, Mrs Morrill and Mr Hughes, who oversee Key Stage 3 and 4 respectively.
The Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral) works with the team to support all aspects of pastoral care. As a result, children feel supported and know who to go to should a problem arise. Communication with parents/carers is of paramount importance and we seek the views of both parents/carers and pupils at regular intervals throughout the school year.
We have a team of Wellbeing Mentors at the school who, alongside the Assistant Head of Year, offer support to pupils for a variety of reasons. Pupils are referred by their Heads of Year and issues such as organisation, behaviour, self-esteem or lack of confidence can be addressed through one-to-one support as required.
