PE

We seek to nurture, develop and enable pupils physically, cognitively and socially through physical activity and sport in order to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

Importance

The Physical Education Department:

P.E. develops pupils’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school.

A high-quality P.E. curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decision. They also reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve them. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy active lifestyles. Discovering what they like to do, what their aptitudes are at school, and how and where to get involved in physical activity helps them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity.

P.E. helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experience that PE offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging situations.

Aims of the Curriculum

The aims of the Physical Education curriculum are to ensure that pupils:

  • Learn and use a variety of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis].
  • Develop technique and improve performance in other competitive sports, [for example, athletics and gymnastics], or other physical activities [for example, dance].
  • Take part in further outdoor and adventurous activities in a range of environments which present intellectual and physical challenges and which encourage work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group.
  • Evaluate and compare performance, demonstrating improvement across a range of physical activities to achieve a personal best
  • Continue to take part regularly in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

All elements of the physical education curriculum are supported by a broad extra-curricular offering. The absolute intention is that these work symbiotically, with each reinforcing the other, both in terms of specific understanding and in the development of wider physical skills.


FAQs

What activities will we be doing in lessons?

At the beginning of the year your teacher will go through the PE timetable with you. This is also displayed around all the indoor PE facilities and changing rooms. You will usually complete a sport for a half term before swapping to a new activity during the next half term. In lessons you will do a range of team and individual sports and physical activities.

What clubs can we be involved in?

At Fernwood we have a wide range of extracurricular activities that run at lunch time and after school. All pupils are welcome to all clubs which are free of charge. You also will have the opportunity to represent the school in a range of competitive sports should you wish to, or you might want to join a club so you can be physically active with your friends. There will be an extracurricular timetable on your tutor display board and also on the school website.

What if I can’t participate in P.E.?

If you are injured and unable to participate in a PE lesson you will be expected to bring in a signed note from your parent/guardian to explain why you cannot physically participate in the lesson. You will be expected injury permitting to bring your PE kit and get changed so your able to take part in the lesson as a coach, official or performance analyst.

Are P.E. lessons mixed boys and girls?

All PE lessons are run in single sex groups but all boys and girls groups experience the same curriculum. We do not set groups by ability in PE as pupils are grouped with pupils of the same gender from their tutor group plus one other tutor group.

What is the kit policy?

The required PE kit required is available on the PE website page and available from Morleys. Any specialist kit, for example shin pads and football boots, will not be required during the first half term of the year 7 and PE teachers will give pupils notice as to when any specialist kit other than t-shirt, fleece/outdoor top, short, socks and trainers will be required.
